What is ransomware and how does it work?

July 17, 2025

Ransomware is a type of malicious software that locks you out of your systems or encrypts your files, holding them hostage until a ransom is paid—often in untraceable cryptocurrency. It usually spreads through phishing emails, malicious links, or infected attachments. Once inside your network, it can quickly disable operations, block access to important data, and demand payment to restore access, with no guarantee the attackers will follow through.
